The AI screen recorder for Windows: what it does, and what it is not

Why the category got a new name

For twenty years a screen recorder was a camera pointed at your monitor. OBS, ShareX, the Xbox Game Bar: you press record, you get a file, and everything that makes a demo watchable is still ahead of you. Cutting the parts where you looked for the menu. Zooming in so the button is readable on a phone. Fixing the cursor. Writing the captions.

Screen Studio changed what people expect, on the Mac. You stop recording and the video already looks edited. Then the word "AI" got attached to anything that makes a decision for you, and the tools that do the editing part automatically ended up under "AI screen recorder". It is not a great name. But it is the name people search for, and the meaning is useful: a recorder that does the editing.

What a good one actually does

Here is the list, in the order it matters for a demo video. This is what Ciakko does today, and it is also a fair checklist for anything else you evaluate.

Zooms that follow your clicks

While you record, the app notes where you click and where you type. When you stop, the timeline opens with zoom blocks already placed on those moments. The camera moves with a spring, not a jump, and pulls back when you move on. The part that separates a good tool from a gimmick is what it frames: Ciakko looks at the control or the window under your click and frames that, not just a circle around the pointer. Every block stays editable: move it, resize it, change the level, or delete it.

A cursor that looks like it was drawn for the video

The Windows cursor is tiny at 1080p and invisible on a phone. The app records its position separately and draws it again on top of the video: bigger, smooth, with a soft ring on every click, hidden when it just sits there. You choose the size after recording, not before.

Dead time that disappears

Every real recording has stretches where nothing happens: a page loads, you read something, you look for the right tab. Ciakko finds them and speeds them up. You can also set the speed of any clip yourself; speech stays understandable up to twice the speed and is muted above that, because nobody wants to hear a chipmunk.

Captions written on your PC

Your voice becomes captions with the timing of each word, in your language, on your computer. No upload, no per-minute bill. The styles are the ones you see on social video: classic, karaoke, box. Click a word in the preview to fix it.

Backgrounds, framing, and the phone version

A color or gradient behind the recording, rounded corners, a shadow, your webcam as a bubble you can move at any time, with the room behind you blurred if you want it out of the shot. Then the same recording exported wide for the website, square for the feed, or vertical for Shorts and TikTok, with the camera keeping the action in frame, and any frame of it saved as a PNG for the landing page.

What it is not

Not an AI video generator. Sora, Runway, Kling and the rest make pictures from a prompt. Ask one for "a demo of my invoicing app" and you get a plausible app that does not exist, with buttons nobody can click. Founders try this first, because it is what the ads sell, and then post on Reddit that the screens were fake. We wrote a whole page about it: AI video generators invent fake screens.

Not a voice recorder or a meeting note taker. Those share the words "AI recorder" and none of the job. If you landed here looking for one, this is the wrong page.

Not a cloud video platform. Loom's value is the link you paste into a chat. That is a different job. A demo for a landing page is a file you own and upload where you want.

The honest table

Four tools people compare on Windows. "Auto zoom" means zooms placed for you on your clicks, not a manual zoom effect you keyframe yourself.

OBS is free and it is excellent at what it does, which is capture. If you enjoy editing, OBS plus a video editor is a perfectly good workflow and costs nothing. If you do not, the editing is the whole point of this category. Screen Studio is the best tool on the Mac and it does not run on Windows. Loom is a messaging product with a recorder inside.

Where Ciakko falls short today

We would rather you read this here than find out after paying. There is no Mac version and none is planned. There are no share links, you get a file. There is no team library. The captions need a reasonably recent PC, and a laptop with integrated graphics will take a few minutes to write them. Motion blur on the zooms is on the list but not shipped. If any of these is your main need, one of the tools in the table above is a better fit, and we say so on the comparison pages.
