Can Codex edit videos? Yes, real recordings, on your PC

OpenAI Codex is built to write and run code, and it does not open a video file on its own. Give it a program that exposes every editing action as an MCP tool, and it edits like a person sitting next to you: it watches the take, decides where to cut and zoom, writes the captions and the voice over, and exports when you say so. On Windows, that program is Ciakko.

In one glance

  • What Codex can do: record, cut, zoom, add captions, chapters, texts and a voice over, make Shorts and thumbnails, organize the library, export.
  • How it connects: a local MCP server that the Codex app, the Codex CLI or the IDE extension starts on your PC. One button in Ciakko writes it into Codex's settings.
  • What it sees: frames of the recording, the transcript, the clicks and the typing, every edit already made.
  • What it costs: your own ChatGPT plan. Ciakko adds nothing per edit.

Why a coding agent needs an editor, not a script

The obvious way to put Codex on a video is to let it write ffmpeg commands, or a Remotion project. For batch conversions and animated explainers that works, because the result is code. For a recording of your own screen it works badly: Codex cannot see where you clicked, where you paused to think, or which minute is the one that matters, so it cuts at times it guessed and you find out at the end.

Editing a screen recording is a visual job. The editor has to look at the take, find the moment the interesting thing happens and keep what a viewer needs. That is the part Ciakko hands to Codex, through the same tools you use by hand.

What Codex sees and does in Ciakko

Ciakko records the screen, the cursor, the clicks, what was under each click and your voice as separate tracks. Codex reads all of it: the transcript with word times, the moments you typed or scrolled, the retakes you marked while recording, and frames of the picture at the times it asks for, either the raw recording or the video as it will be exported. Then it acts: a zoom on the form you filled, a cut of the silence before you found the menu, a caption style, a chapter where the topic changes, a line of voice over where you said nothing.

With the take open in the editor you watch every change arrive, and each one is a single step that Ctrl+Z takes back. Codex never exports unless you ask. Before it writes words the viewer will read or hear, it reads the project brief you wrote, so product names come from you and not from a guess.

Filming a demo of the app Codex just built

If Codex wrote your web app, it can also film its demo. Ask it to record one and it writes a short script of steps, opens the page in the Ciakko browser and plays the script at a human pace while Ciakko records: the pointer moves along a natural curve, clicks land on the controls by their names, typing goes into the fields at a person's pace, and each "say" step becomes a line of voice over at the right moment. Your own mouse never moves. A rehearsal run reports the step that failed before anything is recorded.

How to connect it

Install Ciakko and Codex (the Codex app from the Microsoft Store, the CLI or the IDE extension). In Ciakko open Edit with AI and press Connect: Ciakko finds Codex and adds its own entry to Codex's config.toml, with time limits long enough for a recording or an export. Close Codex and open it again, then ask, for example, "Edit my latest Ciakko take as a product demo". The full steps are in the user guide.

Three ways to edit a video with Codex

Remotion project ffmpeg from Codex Ciakko with Codex
Best for Animated videos made from code Batch cuts and conversions Editing real screen recordings
Codex sees the picture Only the code it wrote No Yes, frames on request
Zooms on your clicks Written by hand No Automatic, and editable by Codex
Undo each change Through version control Keep the original file Ctrl+Z in the editor
Captions and voice over Separate services Separate services Built in
Platform Any, needs Node.js Any Windows 10 and 11

Where the other two are the better choice

If you want a video that does not exist yet, an explainer with moving shapes and typography, Remotion gives Codex a real animation engine and Ciakko does not. If you need to convert a folder of files or cut a hundred clips at fixed times, ffmpeg is faster and free. Ciakko is the choice when the video is a recording of your own screen and the job is to make it watchable.

What stays with you

Buying, activating the license, signing out and starting with Windows are never done by Codex. In the Ciakko browser Codex never types a password; it asks you to sign in. When Codex deletes a take, it goes to the Windows Recycle Bin. Ciakko runs on Windows only, and the connection works with Codex on the same PC. It works the same way with Claude: see Can Claude edit videos?

Questions about editing with Codex

Can Codex edit videos?

Not by itself: Codex writes code and reads text and images, it does not open a video file and change it. It can edit a video when a program gives it the tools to do so through MCP. Ciakko is such a program on Windows: it lets Codex look at a recording frame by frame, read its transcript and its clicks, and apply cuts, zooms, captions, voice over, chapters and exports.

Which Codex works with Ciakko?

The Codex app for Windows, the Codex CLI and the Codex extension for VS Code and other editors, on the same Windows PC as Ciakko. They share one list of MCP servers, so one connection reaches all three. Codex in the cloud, on chatgpt.com, cannot reach a program on your computer.

Is there an MCP server for video editing in Codex?

Ciakko is one. Its bridge is a local MCP server that Codex starts on your PC. Every action you can do by hand in Ciakko is a tool Codex can call: recording, editing, captions, voice over, Shorts, thumbnails, the library and export.

Does Codex see the video?

Yes. When Codex asks for frames, Ciakko sends them as images and Codex looks at them like a picture you paste: it can say what is on screen, find the moment something happens and check its own edits on the video as it will be exported.

Do I have to edit config.toml by hand?

No. In Ciakko open Edit with AI and press Connect: Ciakko adds its own server to Codex's config.toml with longer time limits, because a recording or an export takes minutes and Codex waits 60 seconds by default. Nothing else in the file changes, and Disconnect takes the entry out again.

Does it work with Codex in WSL?

Not automatically. Codex inside WSL keeps its settings in Linux, so Ciakko does not connect it. Use the Codex app, the CLI or the IDE extension on Windows.

What does it cost?

Your own ChatGPT plan, and Ciakko itself. Ciakko calls no AI service of its own for editing and adds no cost per edit. Editing with Codex is part of the 14-day trial; after it, it needs a license.

Edit with Codex

Give Codex the editor, keep the final word.
